Cisco is strengthening its push into identity-centric security through a strategic partnership and investment in Teleport, a company focused on secure access to infrastructure. The goal is to make identity a built-in property of enterprise systems, not just something used when an employee logs into an application.networkworld+1

The partnership comes as organizations manage increasingly complex environments that include servers, cloud workloads, databases, network equipment, automation tools, and AI agents. Cisco and Teleport argue that each of these actors should have a verifiable identity and tightly controlled access to sensitive systems.

From Passwords to Infrastructure Identity

Traditional privileged-access management often relies on storing, rotating, and distributing powerful credentials. While that model can improve security, it can also create friction for administrators who need urgent access to critical infrastructure.

Cisco and Teleport are promoting a different model called Infrastructure Identity. Instead of giving users or services long-lived passwords, the platform uses cryptographic identities and short-lived permissions. Access is granted for a specific task or time window, recorded, and then removed when the session ends.blogs.cisco

For example, a network engineer performing scheduled maintenance could request temporary access to a router or switch. Teleport would verify the engineer’s identity, broker and record the session, and revoke access after the maintenance window closes. The engineer would not receive a reusable credential that could remain active indefinitely.

AI Agents Increase the Stakes

The growing use of AI agents is one reason identity security is becoming more urgent. AI systems can make decisions and interact with infrastructure much faster than human operators. If an agent has excessive permissions, unclear ownership, or access through shared credentials, a small configuration mistake or compromise could affect many systems quickly.

This matters not only for cloud environments and data centers. Identity-based controls may also become increasingly important in industrial networks, robotics, and other systems where unauthorized access could affect physical processes.

What Teleport Adds

Cisco plans to integrate Teleport technology into its broader product portfolio. The companies see an opportunity to combine Cisco’s network visibility with Teleport’s access controls: the network can show where a connection is taking place, while identity systems can reveal who or what is behind that connection.

Part of a Broader Cisco Strategy

The Teleport partnership follows several recent Cisco security moves. Cisco acquired Astrix Security in June for technology related to AI agents and non-human identities, and it acquired WideField Security in July for identity lifecycle security and telemetry. Cisco is integrating WideField’s technology into Splunk’s Agentic SOC platform.networkworld

Cisco had also expanded its Duo offering into a broader identity and access management platform. The company’s direction is clear: identity is becoming a core security control for hybrid infrastructure, cloud services, network devices, automated workloads, and autonomous AI systems.

For infrastructure teams, the practical promise is simpler administration without standing credentials. For security teams, it means better visibility into who accessed a system, what they did, and whether their permissions were still necessary. As AI agents become more common in production environments, that level of control may shift from a security advantage to a basic operational requirement.
